It’s the architect Emanuele Boaretto the first one to celebrate Y-40 The Deep Joy’s 10 years.
An anniversary day, the opening one on the 5th of June 2014, in which the deepest thermal pool in the world has been awarded Guinness World Record, thanks to its depth of 42,15 metres.
The creator and designer of the facility detailed, alongside with a storytelling video from 2014 to 2024, how the deep pool he had imagined to become a SCUBA and freediving school has transformed in a submerged structure, where art, science, culture, education, entertainment, dance and amusement get together, other than being the forefront of the global underwater architecture.
Ph. Simone Piccirilli
«The bet I took with my family consisted in realizing an entirely Italian project, which would withstand cold seasons, in order to practice SCUBA diving, potholing and freediving all year long, from all Europe, thanks to thermal water’s temperature (32-34°C), catching a new target for the area of Terme Euganee: the sports and water segment – reminds Boaretto. – What Y-40 made has overcome any expectation: it has grown to such an extent that it became a video and photo production studio; a science lab, suitable for research centres and universities from all over the world; a training and educational landmark for rescue groups and law enforcement. These are all specialisations that led us to create a new submerged space opening soon, in 2025: Phi 12».
Tutte specializzazioni che ci hanno spinto a creare un nuovo spazio sommerso di prossima apertura nel 2025: Phi 12».
NUMBERS
The NUMBERS, achieved by Y-40, consist in over 100.000 visitors per year, coming from about 100 different contries all around the world, including Australia, Alaska, Chile, Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, South Africa, Japan, China, Taiwan, Colombia, South Korea, Turkey, Mexico, United States.
This new opportunity for the territory of Terme Euganee has expanded the focus on the excellence, represented by salsobromoiodic thermal water, which has been used since the Roman times in balneotherapy, mud therapy and inhalation therapy, now in agreement with the National Health Service. Moreover, this kind of water is precious for the maturation of the unique thermal mud, protected by the European patent, due to its effectiveness, which is equal to cortisone.
The combination between Y-40 and this distinctive resource turned out to be essential for the tourism development of the area, so as to make the Euganean Hills a reference location for the underwater world, which is the biggest European diving centre in terms of amount of guests and issued licences: over 5 thousand.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
It is apparently similar to a semi-Olympic swimming pool measuring 21 x 18 metres, but Y-40 develops on different depths, with several platforms at various heights: -1,3 m, -5 m, -6 m, -8 m, -10 m, -12 m, -15 m and the cylinder that reaches 42,15 meters, which made the pool earn the award of deepest swimming pool in the world in 2014, according to the Guinness World Record.
The flagship of the facility is the 13 metres long submerged tunnel, the first underwater suspension structure, completely immersed at the depth of -5 metres.
Together with it, also the 60 metre route in artificial caves, which is useful for potholing practice, still unique in the world.
SPORT
The bond between Y-40 and the sports world is born in a spontaneous way, not only for freediving champions like Enzo Maiorca, Umberto Pelizzari, Alessia Zecchini, Alexey Molchanov, but also for water athletes, such as Filippo Magnini, Luca Dotto, Giancarlo Pedote and the Italian synchronized swimming National team.
However, the most unexpected guests were many Italian and international Olympic land athletes, who have discovered the importance of breathing, through freediving techniques, exercising in relaxing thermal water’s depths. It is the case of Arianna Errigo, Igor Cassina, Carlton Meyers, Mara Navarria, Sara Cardin, Rossano Galtarossa, Daniele Garozzo, Valeria Straneo, the Athletics National team Fiamme Oro with Massimo Stano and Marcell Jacobs.
Y-40 STUDIOS
Several illustrious visitors, coming from the entertainment world, dived into these swimming pool waters, as a result of the strong relation between Y-40 and show business: Flavio Insinna, Ornella Muti, Dj Ringo, Giovanni Storti, Giulia Calcaterra, Jakidale, Vittorio Sgarbi and Marco Bianchi, who also dedicated a menu to the pool that is thought for all people practicing water activities. Besides them, also Stefano Bollani, Andrea Lucchetta, Domenico Fioravanti, Vittorio Brumotti, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Giuseppe Vessicchio visited our facility.
The forerunner, who turned the spotlight for the first time on Y-40 as a production studio, was Diego Dalla Palma, who shot an entire season of Ciao Bellezza for Rete 4, giving a strong input for all the services in the biggest newspapers and TV broadcasters from all over the world, such as CNN, Fox, Discovery Channel, BBC, EBC Taiwan, TeleFrance1, RAI, Mediaset, SKY, La7. In the last season, the aquatic external shooting set the tone, with Umberto Pelizzari being the co-host for “Lo Show dei Record” on Canale 5 with Gerry Scotti, besides the whole episode of Generazione Bellezza of Emilio Casalini on Rai 3, dedicated to the unique facility and the numerous opportunities, created by Y-40 for tourism and economic development.
Y-40 The Deep Joy features several underwater areas and not, which make it the only facility in the world able to become a true UNDERWATER THEATRE.
The swimming pool, with the volume of a film set, is provided with a stereo system and numerous underwater hooks, thanks to which it is possible to realise scenes and installations, through the placement of lights or special effects.
The most important aspect, though, is knowing how to model the “shape of the water”: creating bubbles, modelling fabrics underwater and moving sinuously, despite the depth.
These are all characteristics that did not go unnoticed by some of the greatest audiovisual production companies.
Y-40 STUDIOS - Music
The Y-40 Studios have quickly attracted the music world, through the set up of the deepest underwater disco in the entire world, Desperados Deep House, a party planned by the notorious beer brand Heineken that, alongside with the assistance and the precious know how of Y-40 team, has involved 500 youngsters from all Europe dancing on the notes of Dj Peggy Gou, inside and outside the water, thanks to the cutting-edge underwater technology of SeaTREK helmets, while listening to high-definition music. This event has reached 546 million spectators and it has allowed the brand to have an increasing engagement up to 981%.
Then, it was the turn of a videoclip, entirely filmed in Y-40, called “Motivo”, where Gianna Nannini and Coez sang about “a spaceship, a million light years far from me” from the submerged tunnel, in front of the 1:1 scale reproduction of the lunar module, which landed on the moon in 1969, during the Apollo 11 expedition. In fact, it was built in collaboration with NASA and immersed into Y-40 swimming pool for the project Y-40® Dive me to the Moon.
Meanwhile, Blanco held an entire Underwater Live Session of the album “Blu Celeste” inside the Y-40 tunnel, while being surrounded by his fans SCUBA diving. It has been premiered on all his social media accounts.
Y-40 STUDIOS - Dance
Privileged location for underwater dancing, Y-40 has hosted all the training sessions of the Paris Opera’s étoile Sylvie Guillem, passing to become the favourite stage of the Chinese performer Dada Li for her twirling dance, but also for many other artists.
In particular, three videos have gone viral, regarding the sixth art: upside down choreographies performed by the Italian synchronized swimming National team, shot by Fabio Ferioli; the heartrending dance of the champion Julie Gautier, choreographed by Ophélie Longuet, on the notes of Ezio Bosso; but also the soft and sensual Tang’o dance, which has been outstandingly performed underwater, in apnea, by the Spanish ballerina Ariadna Hafez Navarro, with the choreography of Bastien Soleil, an incredible underwater performance at the depth of 10 metres, for which 600 night immersions have been necessary, each one lasting a minute and a half.
Y-40 STUDIOS - Advertising
Y-40® has been the scenery of the entire campaign of the Ministry of Culture, shot by Davide Livermore “A Teatro si respira la vita” and within these years of activity, several national and international companies have chosen our facility, in order to organise their events and benefit from the underwater studio. Some examples are: Adidas, Ariete, BlackRock, Calzedonia, Casio, Culligan, Cressi, Decathlon, Dyson, Eni, GoPro, Heineken – Desperados, Intimissimi, Iris van Herpen, Lemargo, Loro Piana, Luisaviaroma, Miele, Officine Panerai, Porsche, Riva Yacht, Scubapro, Sector, Sundek, Xiaomi, Yamaha – Blacksheep Team.

Y-40 OPEN LAB
Since its opening, many among the biggest underwater and hyperbaric medicine centres in the world have chosen Y-40 to carry out their experiments. These constant requests and activities have convinced the company to develop Y-40 Open Lab, a native hub of excellence, opened for the scientific and technological research, to which several research centres and universitites from all over the world refer.
At the moment, the research is spacing between the typical challenges of SCUBA diving, specific pathologies like diabetes, the experimentation of new materials and pieces of equipment, which are useful for the best possible functioning of the activities at the sea, but also in contexts that can be applied to the parallelism with space activities (such as in the space project Sky Scuba Space, carried out in collaboration with DAN Europe).
The most relevant research centres and universities that have addressed to Y-40 so far are: Università degli Studi di Padova (that has conducted a specific analysis, where some arterial blood samples have been taken from freedivers at the depth of -40 metres); Università degli Studi di Bologna; Politecnico di Milano; Università la Sapienza di Roma; Marina Militare Italiana (Italian Navy); London University; UC San Diego School of Medicine.
In 2021, this indoor underwater lab has allowed the INFN of the University of Padua to conduct a study of the Juno experiment’s electronic components (Jiangmeng Underground Neutrino Observatory) in construction in China, that will become the biggest observatory of neutrinos in the world.
Y-40 RESCUE & SECURITY
Several times, Y-40® has also become a safe abyss for professional practice and underwater training.
Many armed forces groups and voluntary associations have addressed to the structure, in order to take advantage of the knowledge of its operators in water education and potholing, such as: Arma dei Carabinieri, the Italian Air Force, the Italian Army, the Italian Finance Police, the Italian Navy, the Italian State Police, the National Fire Brigade Corps, the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, Croce Rossa, the Italian Civil Defence and, among all the international groups, also the USA Army.
Y-40 represents the ideal condition for the underwater scientific research, not only for its depth and temperature, which allows to stay underwater for long periods of time, but also for the absence of currents and weather perturbations. The US Navy has chosen Y-40 to study the pathophysiology of freediving athletes, in a project in collaboration with the Office of Naval Research, US Federal Agency and the Biomedical Sciences department of the University of Padua, conducted by Professor Gerardo Bosco.
Even the NATO has chosen Y-40 for the 2022 summit “Underwater Diving Working Group”, in regard to the safety inside the sea.
